brandi's story

Her journey from death row to a life of love

In 2011, in a Memphis, Tennessee suburb, an animal control officer responded to a caller who heard loud whimpering coming from his neighbor’s backyard. Arriving on the scene, the officer followed the cries to a small wooden crate and found a not-much-smaller puppy in fair condition. He freed the grateful pup and took her to the Tipton County Animal Shelter (TCAS) where staff and volunteers gave her the necessary care, food and water.

Despite being a highly-adoptable beagle/border collie mix, she was soon moved onto the shelter’s euthanasia list due simply and tragically to limited space and lack of funding.

Her case was hardly unusual.

Tennessee law requires that each shelter animal be held for a minimum of three days. Taking in roughly 2000 animals yearly, the TCAS tries its best, extending stays to five days if space permits, and hoping to find permanent homes, rescue groups or foster families for each animal. The clock ticks for five days at most before the unlucky are put down -- and the cycle repeats.

But as the zero hour approached for this little dog, angels stepped in.

Associates for PAWS New England, an all-breed dog rescue group, heard of the puppy’s plight and intervened with only hours to spare. They named her Brandi and moved her to a temporary foster home in Tennessee where PAWS medical staff gave her a medical exam and immunizations and spayed her. Within a couple of weeks she became a playful little puppy and was given a clean bill of health. PAWS associates listed her on Petfinder.com (a site that helps bring families and shelter animals together) and moved Brandi to a Missouri farm – a PAWS New England dog sanctuary – where she could stay until a permanent home became available.

In 2012, a Rhode Island foster family for PAWS New England began searching the organization’s website for their next foster dog. Brandi was in luck. North she went to a family who would care for her until a permanent home could be found. Then, at a party given by the foster family, Brandi and a guest couple bonded almost immediately. Within a week, Brandi was at last safe in a forever-home and the member of a loving family in Warwick, RI.

Brandi faced cruel indifference, narrowly escaped an untimely death, and traveled long and far on her way to a life of happiness with a good family. She is deeply loved, has plenty of room to run and play, and enjoys weekend adventures with her family.

With Brandi as our inspiration and namesake, The Brandi Project is all about creating similar outcomes for as many of her friends as possible.

Brandi’s story proves that caring people joining together for a worthy cause can make a big difference – giving shelter dogs the opportunity for life. Your support  of The Brandi Project helps ensure that many more dogs will have stories that end just as well.
